The HDTV is stands for High Definition Television. The 1080 is a vertical resolution which for widescreen aspect ratio 16:9 implying a horizontal resolution of 1920 pixels. We could be confused by nearly technical terms such as HD Ready, HD Ready 720p, HD Ready 1080i, HD Ready 1080p, native 1080p-capable and Full HD. This article is meant to make the 1080p HDTV Plasma term clear to you, keep reading.

Firstly we need to refresh those terms above for better perception of High Definition Television and 1080p HDTV Plasma.

HD Ready

HD Ready is a standard or a flatform, HD Ready TV concerns the abilities of television receivers to display high-definition pictures. The term has had official use in Europe since January 2005. The requirement for this standard is announced by EICTA, European Information, Communications and Consumer Electronics Technology Industry Associations.

HD Ready 720p (1080i) requirements:

1. Analogue YPbPr HD input

2. Digital HDMI or DVI HD input

3. 720p HD progressive (1280×720 @50 & 60 Hz)

4. 1080i HD (1920×1080 interlaced @50 & 60 Hz)

5. The HDMI or DVI input supports copy protection (HDCP)

HD Ready 1080p requirements:

1. Accepted video formats are reproduced without distortion

2 Display 1080p and 1080i video without overscan (1:1 pixel mapping)

3. Display native video modes at the same, or higher, refresh rate.

4. Analogue YPbPr HD input

5. Digital HDMI or DVI HD input

6. 720p HD progressive (1280×720 @50 & 60 Hz)

7. 1080i HD (1920×1080 interlaced @50 & 60 Hz)

8. 1080p HD (1920×1080 progressive @24, 50 & 60 Hz)

9. The HDMI or DVI input supports copy protection (HDCP)

Where:

DVI : Digital Visual Interface

HDMI : High-Definition Multimedia Interface

HDCP : High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection System

Full HD

Note that a Full HD Devices may not fulfill all HD Ready 1080p requirements, but HD Ready 1080p has encompassed Full HD). The most important thing in Full HD is it has 1080p resolution, so in total creates a frame resolution of 1920×1080, or 2,073,600 pixels.

1080p HDTV Plasma

A 1080p HDTV Plasma is a Plasma TV that has the capability to display 1080p material at full resolution. It has resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels progressive scan. Progressive means the image is not interlace (1080i). The progressive system displays all of the scan lines at the same time, it eliminates flickering in screen images. The interlace (1080i) system switches the display between the odd-number scan lines and the even-number scan lines every 1/60th of a second.

Finally, it’s easy to understand that the equipment which just capable of displaying both 720p and 1080i must cut down the resolution when displaying 1080p material. Sometimes it’s used the native 1080p-capable term to refer to equipment capable of rendering 1080p fully.

  1. Plasma all the way! I love my panasonic viera 42 inch, it looks better than LCDs of similar size, but costs a little less.

    Don’t let salespeople try to upsell you, all you need is plasma these days. They’ve fixed all the problems that used to plague them.
